Surface Tension, located at Utah State University College of Life Sciences, features 534 unique cast and laminated glass ‘drops’, powder coated aluminum cladding, internal LED light, and a steel structure.
Surface Tension deploys cast glass to evoke the “materiality” of water… water, because there is no biological system without it and it is therefore crucial to the study of life sciences. The glass mimics water in three ways: structure – water drop sizes and shapes were analyzed and used as the basis for casting; effect – glass chill marks and light refraction create watery light; image – images of life developed with college faculty can be found by intrepid observers in some of the drops.
FGD Glass Solutions was asked to provide the decorative glass printing and glass lamination for this project.
